Description

A gold Guinea of King James II. James the Second reigned for only four years (1685-1688) so coins from this period are very scarce. This second bust of the gold guinea was struck for only three years, with this particular coin being the last year of James' reign; it depicts him in sombre mood, with pronounced lantern jaw. He made so many enemies and blunders that he took flight and on Christmas day 1688 landed in France never to return again, deposed in the "Glorious Revolution" to be replaced by William and Mary.
