Released by the Royal Mint to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the National Health Service, this proof 50p coin comes boxed with certificate. Only 651 of these gold proof coins were produced.

The Royal Mint issued two versions of this collectable coin - one in a red box and one in a black box. The certificates of authentication and the gold proof coin designs are the same across both versions.

The obverse of the coin is designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, the sculptor responsible for the fourth Queen's portrait, while the reverse design for the NHS was created by artist David Cornell.

The NHS was launched on Monday 5th July 1948 by the Health Minister Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan and the Labour Party. Bevan's predecessor, Conservative MP Henry Willink, proposed the creation of the NHS in 1944 following the Beveridge Report investigation into the welfare state.
