A 1989 gold Proof Sovereign from The Royal Mint. This year marked the 500th anniversary of the original Tudor Sovereign and features a special design as a result. The coin weighs the same as a regular Sovereign, at 7.98 grams and is struck with 22-carat gold (91.67% fineness).
This 1989 proof Sovereign has been struck using specially selected blanks and highly polished dies. During striking, the coinage dies exert enormous pressure on the coin blank, with at least two separate blows (or strikes), ensuring that the impression has extra clarity. Complete with its own booklet, and bound in a good-looking case.
