Description

An impressive 1990 gold medal from the Royal Mint, struck in 9ct gold commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

The design is from the original masterpiece by Benedetto Pistrucci but is reduced in scale. The obverse features the busts of the 4 allied sovereigns who stood against Napoleon (the Prince Regent (later George IV), Francis II of Austria, Alexander I of Russia and Frederick William II of Prussia).

The Reverse features 2 horsemen (Duke of Wellington and Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher) being guided to battle by the winged figure of Victory. Jupiter in his chariot hurls thunder at the combatants below (19 in number - representing the number of years of Napoleonic conflict).

Measuring 64mm in diameter and 7mm thick and 189g. Boxed with certificate.
