The 2023 Petition Crown Proof 2-coin silver set features 2 x 2oz silver coins minted in 999 fine silver honouring former Chief Engraver of The Royal Mint, Thomas Simon.
Simon was a prominent gem engraver, medallist, and coin and seal engraver during the reign of Charles I, who sided with the Parliamentarians during the civil war, committing high treason by copying the Great Seal to aid the parliament's cause.
Despite his acts against the Crown, Simon was rewarded with the position of Chief Engraver for his dedication to the Commonwealth of England. After the monarchy was restored, Charles II appointed another Chief Engraver, John Roettiers, to share the role with Simon. This prompted Simon to engrave two lines of raised edge lettering to petition for his selection, and we can only speculate how he accomplished this feat during the seventeenth century.
The 2 x 2oz Silver Proof Coin set is available in a range of sizes, featuring the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III on the obverse of both coins, designed by Martin Jennings. The reverse designs showcase an effigy of Charles II paired with a recreation of Simon's quartered arms design. The set pays homage to one of the most iconic coin designs in numismatic history, celebrating Thomas Simon's contributions to coinage and the art of engraving.
