Description

An 1863 Half Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria. This half sovereign features the young head design by William Wyon on the obverse and the shield design on the reverse.

The lack of mintmark denotes this coin was produced at the London Mint. Approximately 1,571,574 of these Half Sovereign gold coins were produced, making it quite a rare collector's item.

This was the first year that die numbers were introduced to Royal Mint coins. However, not all Half Sovereigns from this year carry a die number. For those that do, the die number can be seen on the reverse of the coin, at the bottom in the middle, between the flower stops on its left and right.
