Description

An 1871 Half Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria. This half sovereign features the Young head design by William Wyon on the obverse and the shield design on the reverse.

The 'S' mintmark denotes that the coin was minted at the Sydney Mint in Australia. This mintmark is found on the obverse of the coin, at the bottom and in between the two flower stops to its left and right, in the same place the die number would appear on London Sovereigns of this era.

This was the first year that official Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns were minted at the Sydney Mint.

The mintage of this coin is unknown and it is a fairly uncommon coin to come across today.
