An 1873 half Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria. This half sovereign features the Young head design by William Wyon on the obverse and the shield design on the reverse.
The "M" mint mark denotes that the coin was minted at the Melbourne Mint in Australia. This mint mark is found on the obverse of the coin, at the bottom and in between the two flower stops to its left and right, in the same place the die number would appear on London Sovereigns of this era.
This was the first year that official Sovereigns and Half Sovereigns were struck at the Melbourne Mint.
Approximately 165,034 of these Half Sovereign gold coins were produced, and it is a fairly common coin to come across today.
