An 1879 Half Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria. This half sovereign features the Young head design by William Wyon on the obverse and the shield design on the reverse.
The "S" mint mark denotes that the coin was minted at the Sydney Mint in Australia. This mint mark is found on the obverse of the coin, at the bottom and in between the two flower stops to its left and right, in the same place the die number would appear on London Sovereigns of this era.
Approximately 94,000 of these Half Sovereign gold coins were produced, and it is a fairly uncommon coin to come across today.
