Description

An 1885 Half Sovereign from the reign of Queen Victoria. This half sovereign features the young head design by William Wyon on the obverse and the shield design on the reverse.

The lack of mintmark denotes this coin was produced at the London Mint. This is an overdated Half Sovereign, that is to say, a Half Sovereign minted in 1883 which has been overstamped with the year 1885. The 3 is still visible underneath the 5. Very few examples are known to still exist, making it one of the rarest half sovereigns in existence.
