Description

Due to the success of the Krugerrand as the worlds' most popular 1oz gold coin, the South African Mint started to issue a second line of one-ounce coins from 1986, the Protea. The coins were 22-carat until 1997, where they switch to 24-carat.

A 22-carat coin from 1986, it contains exactly one troy ounce of pure gold (31.1 grams), but with an alloy added, it weighs 33.9 grams.

This coin celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the great gold rush.
