A Venezuelan 1000 Bolivares gold coin. This was issued in 1975 only. Just over 5,000 bullion coins were minted and fewer than 500 proof editions.
.
Obverse:.
The obverse of the coin features the year 1975, and displays the Venezuelan coat of arms at the time of minting. This is a shield containing wheat to represent the nation's wealth, weapons to show strength, and a wild horse signifying freedom. Simón Bolívar led Venezuela, amongst others, to their independence from Spain and this is believed to represent Bolívar's white horse Palomo.
The text below the coat of arms refers to Venezuela's independence, its confirmation as a federation, and its overall existence as a republic. REPUBLICA DE VENEZUELA is repeated in large capitals around the coin's edge.
.
Reverse:.
The reverse of the 1000 Bolivares coin features a native bird to Venezuela - the cock-of-the-rock. There are two types, the Andean and the Guianan, and this image displays the smaller Guianan species.
The coin's weight and purity are displayed on this side, as is its face value of 1000 BOLIVARES.
