First introduced in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint to rival the South African Krugerrand, the coin is one of the world's purest official bullion coins, the standard weight has a minimum of 1 troy ounce (31.10g).

The obverse side shows the profile of Queen Elizabeth II, and the main sugar Maple Leaf design has remained unchanged since inception, the official emblem of Canada signifying unity, tolerance, and peace.

The 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Gold Maple Leaf coins were introduced in 1982, and has since expanded further to include 1/2 oz, 1/20oz and 1 Gram Maple Leaf coins.
