A Gold Double Sovereign £2 gold coin in good to fair condition. The Double Sovereign has a long and varied history. First minted in 1450, although never released as a circulating coin, at the time is was considered a presentation coin. Minted again in 1820 for George III, but again not released, which was the same fate for the other Double Sovereigns issued during his reign. It wasn't until 1887 that the Double Sovereign had an official release for Queen Victoria's Jubilee.
The Double Sovereign is the same weight and denomination as the British £2 coin, so they are considered to be one and the same. From 1980, we can see releases of the gold £2 coin/Double Sovereign on a regular basis. 1986 was the first year that a base metal £2 coin was released to celebrate the Commonwealth games. We receive many calls each year from people who have one of these coins believing them to be gold. Although there is a gold version of the 1986 £2 coin, if you find one in your change, it probably isn't gold, in our experience.
A few special designs for the Two Pound coin were issued in the 1980's and 1990's in both gold and base metals. Where a special design was not issued, the Gold George and Dragon Double Sovereign was released. 1998 saw the release of the new bi-metallic £2 currency coin for general circulation. The following years saw many varied designs for the £2 coin and all of these were produced in gold for investors and collectors.
This product will be our choice of any £2 coin/Double Sovereign. These coins contain 14.63 grams of pure gold. Due to their status as British Legal tender they are Capital Gains Tax Free (CGT Exempt), so they are a great choice for British investors.
As the Double Sovereign £2 coin has featured a range of designs over the years, so you may not receive the exact coin as pictured, but rest assured you will receive a great looking coin.
