In 1993 the Royal Mint issued a limited quantity of 1,864 Gold Proof 50p pieces, to celebrate both the UK's Presidency of the EU's Council of Ministers late in 1992 and the completion of the European Single Market at the start of 1993. It was the first British coin to feature two dates.
This Gold Proof 50p piece features a design by Mary Milner-Dickens, with a table and twelve chairs for the Council of Ministers. The UK is at the top chair to reference its turn as president. On the front (obverse) side is the third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as created by Raphael Maklouf.
This 22-carat coin is of the older style Gold Proof 50p piece, meaning it contains more gold (24.1g) than its modern counterpart (14.2g), and is larger at 30mm diameter.
