Good investments for beginners

If you’re a beginner, looking to make your first investment, it can be a daunting prospect. Deciding what to invest in is difficult enough, but many investments can be complicated to set up and understand.

At BullionByPost we believe precious metals, such as gold and silver, are a good investment for beginners. We offer a physical asset you control, with historically good returns, and allow you to purchase online like any other retail product.

Our gold investment guide provides all the important information about why and how you should buy gold, but we've picked a few key reasons precious metals make a good investment:

  • Gold and silver are finite, physical assets. In an increasingly digital world, the definition of ownership and control has become blurred. Even the money we keep in banks can be denied us in extreme circumstances, and devalued over time via inflation or financial stimuli.
  • Precious metals act as safe-haven assets; when economic-reliant investments - like stocks - suffer, gold and silver tend to improve. Historically, political and economic uncertainty see gold and silver thrive.
  • Gold and silver are simple investments. You set up a free account with BullionByPost, pick the product you want, and order it. We post it to you via an insured delivery service and it arrives to your door, or you can opt for secure storage. Either way, you own the metal. There are no meetings with banking assistants, no quarterly earnings reports, and there's no pressure to buy or sell.
  • UK gold coins are VAT-free and Capital Gains Tax exempt. Tax can be a headache for many investors; accountants may enjoy working out how much tax you owe, but gold coins remove the need. Without VAT and CGT you can rest assured your money is maximised when buying and selling.

Best first investment

Gold and silver coins* will make the best first investment for most beginners. Coins are small and easy to store, easy to sell, and have the tax benefits mentioned above. (*Silver coins are also CGT exempt, but are subject to VAT).

Silver is currently far cheaper than gold, and is the lowest-priced precious metal available at BullionByPost. Silver would be the best first investment for someone on a lower budget.

Gold coins offer the best value for money for any investor, thanks to their VAT exemption. The gold Sovereign coin is one of the most popular in the UK, and offers beginners a chance to buy gold at a lower price than the typical one ounce bullion coin. The Royal Mint does produce a selection of interesting collectible series however, that may add an additional element of interest for many first-time investors.
